Tonneau Covers
Truck Bed Covers (Tonneaus)
Bed covers, aka tonneaus, come in a range of styles and configurations. How do you figure out which one is right for you? Each style has its own benefits, so consider materials, how far the cover opens, whether it can be removed, security, and of course cost. Measuring your bed
Put a tape measure inside the bed, from the inside of the bulkhead (front wall) to the inside of the closed tailgate. Round to the nearest inch — a 69" measurement is a 5'8" bed.
Bed length is measured inside the box, not along the outside of the truck.

Why Cover Your Bed?
An open pickup truck bed can be less than ideal. Your cargo is exposed to snow and rain, can seemingly levitate and take flight on its own, or worse yet, walk away with thieves. It only takes a minute for someone to walk up, grab, and go off with your gear. That big open pit behind you can also ruin your fuel economy. Tonneau covers are the solution.
Truck bed covers are sleek, stylish, practical solutions and are available in many different styles, configurations, materials, and price ranges. Bed covers are built from hard or soft materials and are available in roll-up (either hard roll-up or soft roll-up), folding -- including the popular soft tri-fold cover -- retractable, or solid one-piece styles.
Regardless of which bed cover you go with, it will help protect your bed and cargo from the elements and reduce wind drag. Today's covers are all designed for easy bed access, and several styles are fully removable for when you need every bit of bed space you can get. You can't go wrong with any tonneau cover -- there are different styles and price ranges, but you're certain to find one that's practical and stylish. Our H&H Truck & Outdoor specialists are well trained and can help you find the perfect tonneau cover for your truck.
Tonneau Cover Styles
Hard Folding
Folding truck bed covers are the most popular style, because they are very water-resistant, secure your gear, and are easy to open and remove. Hard folding cover panels are built from composite materials or aluminum, and some are even available paint-matched or coated with spray-on bed liner.
Soft Folding
Soft folding truck bed covers offer most of the same features as hard covers, but they are lighter weight and come at a more affordable price point. If protecting your gear from the elements is top of mind, a soft cover may be the answer. Panel materials range from industrial-grade synthetics to high-end canvas.
Solid Covers
With over-the-rail coverage and no external hinges, a solid or one-piece truck bed cover is the most secure and weather-resistant cover available, though they are a bit more difficult to remove when you need a fully open bed. Many are available paint-matched, too.
Retractables
Retractable truck bed covers are like horizontal roll-up doors. When opened, the cover sections stay safe inside a toolbox-like canister at the front of the bed. You will need to sacrifice some bed space for a retractable tonneau and they are not easily removed, but they are very secure and are available in either manual or powered models.
Hard Roll-Ups
Like retractable covers, hard roll-up tonneau covers are strong and very secure. Unlike retractables, these roll up above the bed, so you do not lose any bed space. If you need to haul something tall, a hard roll-up can be easily removed and stored.
Soft Roll-Ups
If you want an easy-to-operate and easy-to-remove tonneau that's also budget-friendly, a soft roll-up tonneau cover might be for you. These low-profile covers sit nearly flush with the bed sides and look great. Soft roll-ups are available in a range of materials, from industrial-grade synthetics to high-end canvas-like fabrics.
Common Questions
What types of truck bed covers are available and how do I choose the right one?
Truck bed covers come in multiple styles including hard folding, soft folding, retractable, roll-up, and one-piece solid lids. Each style offers unique benefits based on materials, security, ease of use, and bed access. Hard folding covers provide strong security with rigid panels, while soft folding covers are lighter and more affordable. Retractable covers offer sleek, low-profile security with variable bed access. Consider how often you need full bed access, your budget, and your security needs to find the best fit.
What are the material differences between hard and soft truck bed covers?
Hard covers use sturdy materials like aluminum, composite, or fiberglass for robust protection and theft resistance. Soft covers typically use industrial-grade vinyl or canvas stretched over a frame, offering lighter weight and easier handling but less security. Hard covers resist dents and damage better, while soft covers can be more flexible and budget-friendly.
How easy are truck bed covers to install and remove?
Most truck bed covers feature relatively easy installation with clamps or rails. Soft folding and roll-up covers often install with minimal tools within an hour. Hard folding and retractable covers may require professional installation to ensure perfect fit and function. Many covers are removable for hauling oversized cargo, but designs vary in how complex removal is.
How do different truck bed covers impact security and weather protection?
Hard covers generally provide the best theft protection due to their rigid construction and locking mechanisms. Soft covers protect well against rain and sun but offer limited security. Retractable covers balance convenience and security with lockable positions. Weather sealing varies, but most modern covers include seals and designs to keep water out and protect cargo.
