Everything the Season Asks For

Hunting is mostly a problem of getting close without being noticed. This section covers the whole of it: stands and blinds that put you where deer move, feeders, scent control for what the wind gives away, optics to confirm what you are looking at, knives for after the shot, plus chairs and lights.

Tree Stands and Blinds are two answers to the same question. A stand puts you above a deer's normal line of sight and above some of your own scent. A blind hides your movement at ground level and keeps weather off you through a long sit. Which one works depends more on the property than on preference.

Scent Control is the largest group in here, and it is broader than a bottle of spray. There are field sprays, body wash and shampoo, unscented laundry detergent and dryer sheets, and odor eliminators for gear. The point is to stop your clothes picking up smells at home that the woods will never explain.

Game Feeders, Archery, Cameras and Optics, Hunting Knives, Chairs and Flashlights fill out the rest. Most of it is seasonal, and it is worth sorting your setup out before opening week rather than during it.

Common Questions

Does scent control really make a difference?

It cannot beat a bad wind, and nothing does. What it can do is stop you adding smells that do not belong in the woods, from laundry soap to shampoo to the inside of a truck. That is why the products here run past field spray into detergent, dryer sheets and body wash. Play the wind first, then keep everything else neutral.

Should I hunt from a stand or a ground blind?

A tree stand gets you above a deer's eye line and out of some of your scent, and it works where you have the trees to hang it. A ground blind hides movement, suits kids and anyone who does not want to climb, and keeps rain and wind off through a long sit. Many hunters keep both and choose by the property and the weather.

Can I see this gear in a store?

Yes. The H&H stores that keep a hunting counter are listed on this page, with their addresses and phone numbers. Hunting gear is worth handling first, whether that is how a blind chair sits, how a stand hangs, or whether a knife closes the way you want. Stock varies by store, so call ahead if you are driving a distance for something specific.
