The general rule is that you want a winch to be rated for roughly twice the weight of your truck, Jeep, or ATV. So, for most trucks that means a winch rated for 10-12,000 pounds. One thing to keep in mind is that by using a snatch block (a pulley) can effectively double your pulling power – or cut the load in half. A steel line can recoil quickly, like a steel whip and is extremely dangerous. A synthetic rope will quickly drop to the ground.
