Trailer Axles & Axle Components

Trailer Axle Assemblies

A trailer axle is the backbone of your trailer's rolling gear. When an axle is bent, cracked, or simply worn out from years of heavy use, replacing it promptly is critical for road safety. H&H carries complete trailer axle assemblies in a range of weight ratings and configurations, including straight axles, torsion axles, and drop axles, for utility trailers, boat trailers, car haulers, and more. Terran Axle and Taskmaster are among the leading brands we stock for axle assemblies.

Trailer Axle Components

Not every repair requires a full axle swap. H&H also carries individual axle components, including hubs, spindles, bearings, seals, and dust caps. Replacing worn wheel bearings is one of the most common and important trailer maintenance tasks; a failed bearing at highway speed can cause catastrophic wheel separation. We carry complete bearing buddy kits and Valcrum oil bath hub caps that make bearing maintenance easier and extend the service life of your axle components significantly.

Trailer Brakes & Brake Parts

Properly functioning trailer brakes are both a legal requirement in most states and a critical safety system. H&H carries electric trailer brake assemblies, brake drums, brake shoes, brake magnets, and hydraulic actuators for surge brake systems. Whether you're doing a full brake overhaul on a boat trailer or replacing a single magnet on a utility trailer, we have the components to get the job done. DeeMaxx is a top brand in our trailer brake lineup, known for its high-quality disc brake systems that offer superior stopping performance over traditional drum setups.

Trailer Suspension Parts

Leaf Springs & Hangers

Trailer leaf springs absorb road shock and support your trailer's loaded weight. Over time, they fatigue, sag, or crack, especially on trailers that regularly carry heavy loads or travel rough roads. H&H stocks replacement trailer leaf springs, equalizers, spring hangers, U-bolts, and eye bolts for a variety of trailer types and axle configurations.

Trailer Jacks & Couplers

A reliable tongue jack and a secure coupler are essential for safe and convenient trailer use. H&H carries tongue jacks in swivel, bolt-on, and weld-on configurations across a wide range of weight capacities, along with ball couplers in 1-7/8", 2", and 2-5/16" sizes to match any standard hitch ball. Coupler locks from Blaylock are also available to protect your trailer from theft when parked.

Trailer Lighting

Federal regulations require trailers to display functioning brake lights, turn signals, running lights, and clearance lights, and for good reason. H&H carries a comprehensive selection of trailer lighting, including LED tail light assemblies, submersible lights for boat trailers, side marker lights, clearance lights, wiring harnesses, and connectors. LED upgrades are a popular choice for trailer owners who want longer bulb life and brighter output compared to incandescent fixtures.

RV Parts & Components

H&H's trailer parts inventory extends well beyond utility and cargo trailers. We also carry components for RVs and travel trailers, including RV exterior parts, interior and entry door hardware, leveling components, storage and tie-down hardware, and miscellaneous RV maintenance items. Whether you're maintaining a bumper-pull travel trailer or keeping an older RV roadworthy, H&H has the parts you need.

FAQs About Trailer Parts

How do I know when my trailer wheel bearings need to be replaced?

Common signs of worn trailer wheel bearings include a grinding or rumbling noise from the wheel area, excessive heat at the hub after a trip, wobbling wheels, or visible rust and pitting when the hub is disassembled. Bearings should be inspected and repacked with grease at least once per year or every 10,000–12,000 miles of trailer use, whichever comes first.

What size coupler do I need for my trailer?

Coupler size must match your hitch ball size exactly. The three most common sizes are 1-7/8" for lighter trailers up to about 3,500 lbs, 2" for trailers in the 3,500–8,000 lb range, and 2-5/16" for heavier trailers and fifth-wheel applications. Your trailer's tongue should have the coupler size stamped or labeled on it.

Are electric brakes and surge brakes interchangeable?

No, electric brakes require a brake controller in the tow vehicle to send an activation signal, while surge brakes use a hydraulic actuator mounted at the coupler that activates when the tow vehicle decelerates. The brake assemblies at the axle are different for each system and are not cross-compatible. Always confirm which system your trailer uses before ordering replacement brake parts.

Can I replace just the brake magnet on my electric trailer brakes?

Yes. The brake magnet is a serviceable component and one of the most commonly replaced electric trailer brake parts. Over time, magnets wear down from friction contact with the brake drum. Replacing the magnet alone, without replacing the entire brake assembly, is a common and cost-effective repair.

What is the difference between a straight axle and a torsion axle on a trailer?

A straight axle uses leaf springs to absorb road shock and is the traditional, widely used design. A torsion axle uses rubber cords inside the axle tube for independent suspension at each wheel, providing a smoother ride and lower maintenance requirements. Torsion axles are popular on boat trailers and enclosed cargo trailers where ride quality matters.

How do I find the right leaf spring for my trailer?

Trailer leaf springs are specified by their length (eye-to-eye), arch height, width, number of leaves, and weight capacity. The easiest way to match a replacement spring is to measure the original or locate the trailer's manufacturer specifications. H&H's team can help you identify the correct spring. Call us at 800-953-7108 with your trailer's make, model, and axle weight rating.

Does H&H carry boat trailer parts specifically?

Yes. Many of the trailer parts H&H carries are directly applicable to boat trailers, including submersible trailer lights, corrosion-resistant hub assemblies, boat trailer winches, bunk boards, guide-ons, and coupler locks. Boat trailers face unique challenges due to repeated water submersion, so using the right corrosion-resistant components is especially important.
